Abstract:
Implantable neural interfaces, serving as transformative tools in the realm of brain science research, have persistently grappled with biological failure stemming from immune responses. The culprit originates from the unattainable seamless compatibility of device interfaces with the local brain environment. We present a biocompatible all-hydrogel neural electrode array. The bio-inspired characteristics were emphasized by neuron-scale geometry size, ultra-soft mechanical compliance, sufficient hydration capacity, and open-topology adaptability in three dimensions. Particularly, precise bimolecular conformation regulation underpins efficient and stable ion-electron transduction pathways and physiological environmental tolerance. Leveraging these advantages, the proposed 16-channel electrode array realizes chronic single-neuron spike tracking for over 6 months. This research focuses on high-biocompatibility hydrogel neural interfaces and provides innovative insights to address the challenges associated with their micro/nano-fabrication, electrical performance, and in vivo stability.
